EXCUSE ME, BUT I CAN'T HELP BUT WONDER...

  • what type(s) of interfacing was used in this coat?
  • what special couture sewing techniques were used in it's construction?
  • when will somebody release a good full length picture of the dress that was underneath?
  • which big 4 pattern company will reproduce a pattern for the look?
Never heard of Thom Browne, but he really showed out with this design.  What a beautiful coat!  And those gloves, just the right POP of color.  I couldn't help but get excited about the outfit, and the inauguration as a whole of course...

  1. That coat made me holler!!! I love Mrs. O. If she was still cold with that coat, you couldn't even tell. Her style is just amazing and consistent. Don't even get me started with the hair!

    1. Girl you know I was screaming when I saw it too! I don't even know if I could pull off that "swing style" coat, but I truly loved it. Yes you are right, she does have a consistent style. And the hair had just the right amount of BOUNCE - the kind we are always looking for.

  2. You know the Isabel Toledo dress had a layer of batting, like a thin thermal layer sewn into the dress and it looks to me like the same thing was done to this dress. Also she had a cardigan under the jacket and over the dress, just like the last inauguration.

    I'm sure we'll see a pattern soon!

    1. Wow, your eyes could see right through that coat. I knew someone would know! That's an amazing thought, that layer gave the coat just the right amount of stiffness to make that swing style stand out just perfectly. Mmmmm, wish I could wear it! I'm waiting for that pattern.

    2. Browne being a designer of neckties and mens' wear would be prong to using stiff interlinings and such. I would guess that he used stiff tie interfacing from the waist down along with horsehair in the hem (along with a hem facing to create the allusion of a swinging hem. Just my opinion.

  3. Weren't the gloves just perfect and the belt from J. Crew? I love it all.

The coat is beautifully tailored and fits so snug and trim that I also was wondering what was underneath. I assume that simple dress and sweater. I wasn't too crazy about that and thought maybe just a touch more formality would have been appropriate. But did she look good in it? Fabulous!

Her red burnout gown tonight was spectacular, just spectacular and so flattering to all of her best features and she has many.

  11. Oh Faye, that entire ensemble was breathtaking! Did you see my post?!? The FLOTUS has amazing style. I can't wait for that coat pattern to emerge!!! I believe BURDA Patterns will do an exact replica of it. Yes, Thom Browne is famous for men's wear and I love his interpretation of Men's Wear. His inspiration was from a collection of neckties how awesome is that?

  14. Faye I agree with everyone that coat was classy and of course she wore it well. Love me some Obama's period. Mrs. O always looks very classy and on point.

  15. Mrs. Obama style is flawless and beautiful. Any woman on the face of this earth can wear what she wears because the styles she chooses can pretty much be adjusted to fit all body types. Her clothes are modern, classic and timeless. I love, love her coat. The fabric that the coat was made off is lovely and oh my gosh Jason Wu did a fabulous job. The red velvet gown was lovely and it fit her perfectly. Kudos to Mrs Obama and Jason Wu.

    1. Alethia I can't even imagine how careful you need to be when working with that much velvet. Just thinking about pressing the seams makes me a little woosie. Guess that's why one needs a velvet board - which I don't have yet.

  19. My bet is Butterick is going to knock off that dress, as they've knocked off a few of Michelle O.'s dresses before.

That family has some style! I also liked Sacha and Malia's coats and scarves.

  20. I'm with you about Butterick being the one to do it. I also loved the girls coats and scarves.
