I WANT IT ALL...PART 4 (PANTS FITTING) BABY'S GOT BACK, BUT NO HIPS...

...Houston, we have lift off!  I finally have a descent pants block/sloper!  I had the most wonderful tweedy light weight linen in my stash from last year's Hancock going out of business sale.  I couldn't get around to using it last summer so I decided to use it now for my next pair of pants.  I am happy to report that I had to do VERY LITTLE TWEAKING.
I have no front diagonal wrinkles and the back fits to my liking.  I did have to take up a small wedge at center back to eliminate gapping, and take in the side seam hip curve area which is not out of the norm for me.
These are only minor adjustments that I will work out on my sloper before I make more pants, but it reminds me of a scene from my younger years...

I can remember my Mother helping me dress when I was just a tween.  She'd say, "it's so hard for you to wear skirts, you have NO HIPS and there is nothing for them to sit up on; and  your butt is so high it makes the skirt hike up in the back".  Can I tell you that this made me feel likes a freak of nature!  I developed a complex about something that I didn't understand, nor could do anything about - until I started studying FIT.  I've learned that my Mother was absolutely correct - "Baby's got BACK - but no HIPS!  BUT, there are adjustments that can be made to compensate for that!
Love, love, love my new labels
I've got a nice fitting pair of linen pants now, but during construction there was one little problem.  Raise your hand if this has ever happened to you
Yes, I serged the back leg of my new pants!  My eyes immediately teared up, but I quickly shook it off, because "THERE'S NO CRYING IN THE SEWING ROOM!"  My friend SheilaCTK sent me a quick answer to the problem "TIM GUNN IT"!  We all know that means "MAKE IT WORK" - and so I did.

I'll close with this cute little sewing cartoon I saw recently that made me laugh...

  12. The pants look great Faye. You are not the only one with this sort of figure - it's awkward to fit and with the modern thing of low waisted pants - forget about it, they slide down. Anchored firmly at the waist is the way to go for you and I.

    1. Thank you Sarah. You are so right about the sliding part. We learn to work with what we've got and make the necessary adjustments. But it does indeed take time and patience.

  14. I love your new header and format! They look terrific! I almost cried for you when I saw that cut in your pants; I've done that myself, including recently when I was turning a maxi dress into a street length dress, and taking the excess to turn into a summer dress...messed up the serging on the side seam, and had to find a workaround. That wasn't as bad as messing up on a pair of pants, especially with how pretty that fabric is. I'm sure you will make it work, or, "Tim Gunn it!"

    1. Yes, I Tim Gunn them and kept it moving. So sorry about the dress you were working on. Thanks for the complement about my header. I'm still not satisfied with it though. I want something bright and cheery and girly.

  15. The new header looks great! It's so good to see your happy face in your beautiful garments. If we never remember Tim Gunn's tireless cheerleading and generous encouragement of others, let us always remember "Make It Work" because that phrase is just brilliant. I'm glad you could save the pants--the fabric looks lovely. And how cool that you're learning about your own unique shape. My own hips are there widthwise but rather flat, and though I have a flat seat, I still have to take out a bit at CB for gaping...maybe we all do? In a way, those of us who take it on to learn how to fit pants are training ourselves through sweat to be our own tailors!

    1. Thank you about the header Elizabeth! I'm still not really happy with it BUT I needed a change. I want something girly and pretty and bright. But downloading/saving my blog just in-case is very confusing to me. I tried to switch to another template and up load the saved blog to it - and it didn't work - so I just changed my header instead. Still looking for a way to make changes.

Yes, pants are always a Make it Work job for me, and I too have to take a small wedge in at center back seam somewhat like a dart to get a good fit.

  16. WooHoooooo!!! on the new pants! It's been years since I'v tried sewing them, but may be forced to since finding sizes in both plus and tall is near impossible it seems. Even though we don't have the same shape, I'll be revisiting your journey for moral support.

And yes, I've done the serger thing. In fact that's why I have pondered learning to do reweaving, even though I mostly sew knit tops lately. What did you do to fix the cut?

    1. Thank you JustGail! Please, please stay with me on this journey Gail - I'm not finished with it yet. We can do this thing together.

To fix the cut I took a small scrape piece of fabric and just darned/patched it. Like SheilaCTK suggested,I "Tim Gunned" it.

    1. Thank you Linda! Pants fitting is still a work in progress for me. So much is dictated by the fabric too.
