Demystifying Pattern Ease...
...I still don't all there is to know about pattern ease allowed for different silhouettes, so I did a little self-study this afternoon. I found the pattern ease chart for McCall's, Butterick and Vouge on the Butterick website but was not able to find the one for Simplicity Patterns.

Deletei think the ease is on the front part of the actual pattern. I was confused about this for years, but someone pointed out the numbers to me. It tells you what the ACTUAL measurements are at the bustline and the hipline. This is useful, but I feel that it would be better placed on the pattern envelope, so you know if can work within their measurements!
ReplyDeleteI think it should be placed on the pattern envelope as well. I too have been confused about this for far too long, that's why I decided to dig a little deeper so hopefully get a light bulb moment about it all.
DeleteHmm...I can't seem to find an ease chart either. Like Anonymous said, Simplicity does print finished garments measurements on the envelopes, so ease can be determined there. Maybe someone at Simplicity can make a general ease guide available.
ReplyDeleteThanks, I'll look a little closer at the Simplicity envelope. I usually tend to go with sizes that are too large for me in fear of making garments that are too small. I'm trying to fine tune size selection so I don't risk wasting any stash.

DeletePattern companies used to have a description that ran somewhat like this:

The terms fitted , semi fitted, loosely fitted and negative ease, are technical terms in the sewing world. These descriptions were invaluable when deciding the buy a pattern. I especially miss the description that tells the sewer if the patterns for pants and skirts are drafted for the waist or below and how far below.
Also it would be a little weird to take a pattern out of the envelope at Joann's to look at the ease specs, don't you think?
