#2018 Make Nine & Pants Fitting...

...let's talk pants again - yes again.  Fitting pants has been an ongoing challenge for me as you know.  However, I have not given up on trying to achieve the elusive correct fit. I think I've read every book and blog post on the subject and should be an expert by now - but I'm not.

My main problems have been understanding adjustments needed for the crouch area, and identifying corrections to alleviate wrinkles across the front.  I've recently made a new pair, a wearable muslin as such, that I'm pretty much satisfied with.

Using the curve ruler that I bought a few months ago has helped me better understand how to transfer my crouch shape and measurement to the actual pattern.  For this pattern I added about a 1/4" to the back crouch point and 1 full inch to the actual back curve (if that makes any sense). It worked pretty good this time, but these are knit pants.  Next I will need to try the same theory to woven fabric to see what I get.

I do plan to make this same pattern in another knit fabric that I have, but since this wearable muslin wore well for me all day at work I'm counting them as part of my #2018 Make Nine challenge.  Four down and five more to go.

I'll let you know how well the second pair turns out later...

  1. The entire outfit looks great on you, Faye! I mad one pair of jeans that turned out fair as fa as I, then life happened all over me and I’ve basically become a blog reader and fabric buyer/hoarder. Your pants look great from here!

  2. I love your choices for your Make 9 challenge. Those pants look good on you! Congratulations. Pants are hard. I only just learned how to make a pair and they are easy elastic pull on pants that are very loose fitting. I haven't gotten to the point where I feel confident enough to try a more fitted pattern. Happy sewing!

  3. Stunning! Do you mean the crotch shape? I was trying to visualize then remembered these are pants not a top...I have wondered about those rulers. I keep meaning to buy the new Palmer Pletsch book you mentioned too....I have learned so much from those books and videos. I saw Patti a long time ago...when she worked for Armo Interfacing company. She traveled to the fabric store I worked at for a demonstration. I learned so much from her that day and it was the beginning of a lifelong friendship with this woman who was probably 19 or 20 at the time.

  4. Ms. Faye, you did an awesome job on these pants! And they go together so very well with that beautiful top! I’m so happy to see you hung in there with pants fitting and never give up! You are bound to get great results with persistence! Once you get your true fit and have a block to work from, there is just no stopping you!

  5. I am glad you got a wearable muslin! My short alterations, created new fitting issues, made a couple more adjustments and though better, not quite there. I admire your persistence on getting a good fit and I think you are well on your way!

  7. I think your pants look pretty darn good! It sounds like you're getting an idea of the changes needed to the fit points. If you're going to try out a woven next be sure to get one blended with a touch of Lycra for slight stretch, it makes all the difference.
