WONDERING WHAT I'M UP TO...

...although I do have a project underway my week got in the way (numerous meetings, an evening pre-prom fashion show, and helping out at a job fair on Saturday); and altered my sewing mood.  I've just not been able to work on it.

I started a wearable muslin for Vogue 1250 (you know the one) as my project for the monthly sewalong with my friends last Sunday.  The dress just needs to be hemmed and then it's finished - but I've not been able to muster up the motivation to do it.  I promise myself that it will not become a UFO - matter of fact I might just go ahead in hem it this afternoon although I have tons of other things that need to be attended to.

I did complete on a "calm me down" project - not too thought provoking - a bit of mindless sewing if you may.  I did self draft a portion of the project,  it's my version of a Cupcake Apron.   I've been wanting one of these for my collection - a few frills and of course ruffles.  I have several people I'd like to make apron gifts for, but I keep falling in love with each one that I make, and therefore haven't gifted anyone so far...

Otherwise, it is New Project Sunday, got to go find something to work on.

The four deep pockets across the bottom are replicas of vintage seed packets.  How cute!

#5 apron was gifted to me by my Mom several years ago.  It was actually an apron kit that I found very interesting.  Not sure how old the kit was when my Mom uncovered it in her attic, but the price tag on it was $1.00.  The apron was it's own pattern printed on one single piece of cloth.  The instructions were even printed on the same piece and look like this.

 I've seen apron kits at the fabric store, but they cost a little more than $1.00 now.  Like I said, don't worry - there's only one more to come, and then it's back to garment sewing for me.  But this does give me an idea... 

I HEART SATURDAYS...

...Why, you might ask?  Because it's the day I get to do what ever I WANT TO DO!!!  I chose to dedicate the am portion of this Saturday to my apron affinity (figured I could afford to be a little selfish with my time today), and have a little fun.   I've collected quite a few apron patterns during the past year, and now was the time to finally get some of them done up - not that I don't have oodles of other projects dancing around in my head.

GUESS I HAVE A BIT OF A POLKA DOT AFFINITY TOO...

Isn't this just toooooo cute?  I think so, and I think every lady needs one just like it.  I fell in love with Simplicity 3752 the moment I saw it.  The ruffles add just the right amount of Wimsey, and I even styled it for you too.  Mom made sure I  pressed the tank top before I took the picture - ha ha.

There is one more apron waiting to be made up.  Now I need to force myself out of the sewing room to get ready for an early afternoon pre-Superbowl fish fry.  I only plan on staying about two hours, so maybe, just maybe that next apron might come into being.  We'll see... 

  

THE ROOT OF MY APRON AFFINITY...

...I grew up in an extended household and my Granny, Mrs. Jesse Lee Thomas, ALWAYS were aprons.  I really can't pinpoint a time when she didn't have one on; she wore one while gardening, starched and pressed the ones she wore to her "Society Meeting", and of course the apron was part of her regular kitchen attire.     I can remember sitting in her lap - positioning my body in that apron down between her legs and it then became a swing of some sort (of course I was 100 plus pounds lighter back then).  Her aprons always had at least one pocket, and man you could find all sorts of things in there.  Maybe a peppermint, maybe a hankie, a spool of thread, and sometimes even a nail (as she was also a female carpenter - lol).

I still miss my Granny, and always will.  I attribute my apron affinity to her, but I only own two at the moment.  The one I made in 8th grade Home Ec class - my very first sewing project. Granny had kept up with it for me.  She returned it to me after I had long forgotten about it.   She must have known that the sewing bug would really hit me one day.  My other apron is one I made last summer that I've actually gotten lots of use from.

As a tribute to her I've decided to feed that affinity every now and again by adding to the collection.  So if you come over and happen to find me in the kitchen, I'll have one for you to wear too!  I've even got a special hanger on the kitchen door ready to house the collection.  Here's a picture of #3:

It's McCall's 6132 that I've done in two shades of polka dots and black.  The apron is fully faced or lined but not really reversible.  Guess I should have faced the hem in black as an after thought, but oh well.  I might go back and add a row black rick rack.  The pattern is easy, but the instructions for the straps were far more detailed for what I wanted to put into an apron. So I took sewer's liberty and made up my own.
