RUFFILICIOUS...

...I've been sewing fellow bloggers, just not my normal love - fashion apparel.  I decided that it was finally time to get my bathroom curtains done up.  It was a big decision as well as a big job to accomplish.   You know me, no matter what the project is, I always have to add more to the design than called for which always adds to the work and the time it takes to get it done.

About a week ago I found this picture of a shower curtain and it was love at first sight.
Source:  Pottery Barn
Plain, with just the right touch of femininity - I knew this curtain was for me.  Simple, yes; but by the time I got what seemed like a thousand miles of ruffles completed I was wishing I had shelled out the $69.00 cost of the Pottery Barn curtain.   But, you know me - I want the satisfaction of having pretty things that I make with my own little hands.  It just goes along with my (ha ha) "I can make anything!" philosophy.

The Pottery Barn curtain had just four simple rows of ruffles, of course mine ended up with six rows.  One of the draw backs I find with a purchased shower curtain is that I can never ever find a matching window curtain or valance.   Making my own allowed me to have that extra.  The PB curtain was made from ticking, my version was constructed from a full size set of sheets purchased on sale for $18.00.   I also lined my curtains and added a chain weight in the bottom hem to assist with the drape.

Window Valance
The only bad thing is I couldn't get a full sized picture in my tiny bathroom.  This was a real labor of love and I really like it a lot.  But, alas I am in desperate need of new clothing - so it back to garment sewing for a while.  I do have several other rather large home deco projects planned that I'll fill you in on later.

How about you???  Any home deco projects brewing at your house????

  1. Pretty... Pretty and love the matching valance. Sheet sets are my go to fabrics for window treatment.

  2. I love what you did. My s-i-l tuned me into sheets many years ago when she had extra long windows to dress. And boy do I know what you mean when you say you almost wished you had shelled out. But yours are much, much nicer.

  5. Faye, this is gorgeous! There's a special feeling when you've made it yourself and I know the hard work was worth it. Your curtains are nicer than the original.

  9. I like your shower curtain creation!

I made a sheet set for my king-sized bed earlier this year, and I have fabric to make another set.

  12. So much nicer than Pottery Barn's. So much more satisfying, but there is nothing like sewing miles of straight stitching, is there? I can only do so much home dec sewing before I lose my mind. Figuratively, of course.

  13. Love your curtains and may even steal the idea. I desperately need to do curtains (drapes) for our family room...embroidered red silk, our game room, red with white polka dots....and my sewing room (to be determined as I keep changing my mind. Be advised that we recently moved here, so that is the reason for my bare windows.

Very nice job, Faye! You did a great job knocking off the PB curtain. I did home dec for a while back in 05 and 06 after I bought my house. I am done for now and have *no* intentions of returning to home dec for a while - unless I move to a new house!

  15. I moved in February and have yet to complete my curtains for my bed and bathrooms. Yikes!

I want to make my own shower curtain. Do you need special fabric for that?

  16. Faye, on the right side of my blog is a "word cloud." Click on the word "sheets" to see the sheets I've made.

  20. Faye you did a fabulous job on these! Love everything about both the valance and shower curtain! You should be so proud everytime you walk into your bathroom!

I used to do home decor all the time...now I am like Lynn, "no intentions of returning to it" unless I have an urgent need!

  21. Very nice Faye. I need a shower curtain for my guest bath and I really haven't found one that I like. I might try my had at making my own. Thanks for the inspiration.

  22. Faye, My Joann's usually has double-wide fabric in the quilting section. Of course, I used my 50%-off coupon for it!

  23. They are gorgeous and look just like the ones from PB

  24. Great job Faye! They look amazing! I might be back in Atlanta in the fall of 2013, so there may be another opportunity to meet up! :)

  25. I once did a shower curtain and matching window curtain out of a set of sheets, edged with white eyelet at the borders. It was a great way to get enough fabric for a shower curtain! Your ruffles are really pretty, Faye. And of course you need new clothing; you're a stylish lady, after all!

I'm still hemming and hawing over redoing the valances in my family room. Some day I'll just bite the bullet and do it.

  26. I've never done any home dec but this is just too cute! The ruffles are adorable and the matching curtain is perfect.

  27. Wow, these new curtains look fantastic. Love the mini ruffle look too. I can't imagine gathering all the fabric. Great job! I am going to be sewing a dog bed soon.

  28. Faye, The bathroom is beautiful. And to answer your question. Yes, home dec projects are brewing. I need new curtains and a duvet for one bedroom.

  29. Hi Faye... I can certainly relate to simplicity of paying for the finished product versus the time and effort making it myself. But, the satisfaction of a "job well done" is priceless. Your version easily rivals that of the PB inspiration - great job!
