WARNING...

....REGARDING:  VOGUE 1357 TOP

I should have made a doggone muslin - yes a muslin of this simple looking top.    So what's the problem with the pattern?
  • Well, on me the armhole is  2 1/4" too low - causing major underarm bra exposure
  • I decreased the center front neckline and center back 1".  Needed to decrease 1 1/2" to 2" instead.
  • Increased back strap seam allowance to 1 3/8" to remove excess slackness
Don't know if it would be worth it to give this pattern another try after making the needed adjustments.   After running into these problems the top is not that cute to me anymore.  I think I'll cut my loss and just move on...

  2. I agree with Mrs. Smith - so do I. It's a hard one isn-t it - how to know if the pattern is worth pursuing with alterations, or if it will be another wadder.

  3. Arrrgggg! isn't it dissapointing when a simple pattern turn out to be a poorly drafted pattern. I had the same issue with Vogue 1312, I've been working on it since April. Walk away and go back to the pattern, after making the changes to the pattern make a quicl muslin, if you are not happy then trahs it!

  4. That is so disappointing! Maybe it's time to recover by whipping up a TNT.

  5. I tread carefully now when a pattern reads easy. I agree, try it again since you have made adjustments.

  6. How disappointing for you. I think there are some serious fit/ease issues going on in commercial patterns these days. Maybe try a muslin then if it still doesn't appeal move on.

  7. What a disappointment. It's an awfully cute top. I think I would make up something fast and easy that I know will fit and them come back to this top. Look at it this way, you now have a muslin made. The hard part is over!

  8. Aww. So basically the top is just huge all over. That's too bad. But better that you cut your losses! I hope you didn't ruin too nice a fabric.

  9. I find it particularly irksome when Vogue presents a "Designer" pattern that is poorly drafted. That wouldn't have happened back when they gave us American Designers and others like Yves Saint Laurent.

  10. So sorry... So frustrating when a pattern turns out like this..

  11. It's too bad the top didn't work for you. I hate when I have to scrap a garment, but we just move on to the next project. There is always something else to sew!

  12. So sorry this didn't work out for you! I understand being frustrated and annoyed when you've used precious sewing time on a pattern and it didn't work!

  13. Maybe in a few weeks' time you'll feel like attacking this pattern again. I hate spending time on something only to have it disappoint, so you have my sympathy there. On the other hand, your black tunic from the previous post is really pretty! Nice that it works for those of us in the "Over 21" set!

  14. That's too bad. It happens to us all. The thing is to know when to kick the project to the curb. Your pants are fabulous and I know you'll be back in the groove again.

  15. I think you can work this out and it will look great. Maybe it just needs to be put away for a while.

  16. I wonder who made that top for that ultra-scrawny model and did they have the same problems with it that you did? I find it difficult to believe that that red-headed stick insect shown wearing the top here would not have had a problem with too-low armholes, unless she's 6'5' and those emaciated arms are much larger than they seem!

  17. Wow, so sorry Faye! I am not sure what fabric you were using for this top, However I believe you have a pattern similar to that top that is made using knits, that I think is just as pretty that will be a very quick sew to help get over it! It's on that pattern I just finished. New Look 6108. Take a look at that pattern to see if the red top the model is wearing looks simililiar to the one you were just trying to complete. Hope it works out for you!

  19. I´m very sorry for you...and for me too, I just ordered the pattern :(
Now that I see the side view of the model it looks like the armholes are also very low on her blouse. I bet you can fix that, and give me some hope!
