BLC 2016 Day 4: HALLOWEEN FUTURE...

...t'was the day before Halloween and I had nothing to wear.  So up popped the idea to make a dress with this stashed yardage.
When I was first gifted (Ebony, The Glamdoll) this wonderfully feeling knit (I think it's an Itty - but it's super soft), I said oh my goodness what gorgeous BLACK AND WHITE fabric!  So soft and cuddly, I love it.  But wait a minute.  What print is this?  More careful observation revealed - It's a SKULL!   I was shocked.   I must admit that Halloween is not my favorite holiday.   I actually tried to part with the fabric several times because of the skulls, but kept being drawn back to it because again, it's soft and cuddly.

So last Sunday I decided to whip a dress up real quick with said fabric to wear on Halloween.  I thought my kids would get a big kick out of it.  It would become my annual Halloween dress, one that I'd pull out year after year to amuse my students.  I'd use McCall's trusty little t-shirt dress 6886.

Having used this pattern twice before (here & here) it came together easily.  Only four pattern pieces AND NO BUST DART - love that feature.  The neckband went on effortlessly although the top skull seems a little askew.  I didn't pay much attention to pattern placement because (well)  the skulls were everywhere.  There was only one problem with the dress - I DIDN'T FINISH IT IN TIME to wear on Monday.  I actually finished it just last night. Oh well, it will be used for Halloween Future...

  5. Well, I positively love it, skulls and all. In working with the Hispanic community back in the day, I learned about Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead. It is a celebration of one's ancestors and all done with joy and glory and respect. Skulls are a big part of the celebration, including "sugar skulls". Skulls are depicted with flowers and all sorts of happy surroundings and bright colors and even eaten as candies. I think the many skulls we are currently seeing in fabric and other arts stems from this celebration as well as Mexican artists who have hit mainstream marketing. I love the skulls. Sidenote: I have a friend who came over one day with the most awesome black lace shawl. She said, "oh, this thing. I have it a couple years." The she turned around and I said "I love the skulls in the lace" which got a response of "what skulls?" In her having worn it "a hundred times, all she saw was the black lace, not the skulls and was truly surprised. We decided then and there she was one badass grandma!

  6. That's a great Halloween dress. I'll bet you could have worn it unhemmed (if that was what remained unfinished) and no one would have noticed. Your kids will love it! And I like that pattern; I love a simple, straight dress like that.

  9. I want that fabric! It's a great dress for anytime, not just Halloween. Alexander McQueen is still using skulls for scarves and I think some garments.
