PATTERN STORAGE...

...recently I bought 9 new sheers for the picture window of my creme de la creme living room.  This post is not about the sheers however, but rather the packaging they came in.

I trace off lots of patterns.  After tracing it's almost impossible to get the new traced pattern and the original pieces back in the pattern envelope.  I keep a box of cheap gallon size zip lock bags in my sewing room just for this purpose.

I was just about to haul these out to the trash when my hoarder instinct (which I am fighting by the way) kicked in with the idea of using the packaging for pattern storage.

I've traced this pattern three times to add my own twist to the design.  (You know me, can't leave well enough alone.)  All of it fits perfectly in this little zippered bag.

Me and my hoarder instinct are very happy with this...I'm just saying...............

I upcycle plastic bags all the time. I've even taken to using plastic produce bags (dried, of course) to store traced patterns.

  2. I also use them to store pattern, fabric, and notions to keep projects togeghter until complete. The large ones for quilts are great for fabric storage too.

  3. I never throw them away! They're also great for keeping knitting and crochet projects together. I don't think it's hoarding if you have an immediate need. Besides you don't buy 12 sets of sheers everyday!

  4. I love the hoarder quote! Personally I think reusing materials makes you a very "green" person and not a hoarder at all! :)

  7. Long live us hoarders! Some of the big box office supply stores sell what they call ticket envelopes. Open along the 9" edge. My husband uses those for his bill receipt system. I've been know to slip a few away. I keep the relevant Burda magazine and the paper tracing folded into one of these, along w/ the muslin. But the recycle thing is so much better if available.

  8. You and your inner hoarder should be pleased! What a great second use for something that would have ended up in a landfill.

I fear throwing those plastic bags away as I may realize I need them after I toss them! :-). My Mom gave me a few last year (which I still have). As I'm trying to organize, pattern storage sound like a perfect use! Thanks! And you're right: It's a struggle getting those pattern pieces back in --almost impossible. You just solved the problem. :-)

  10. You're not a hoarder, you're a very sensible woman! You know exactly how to improvise and "make it work"!

  11. I buy pattern envelopes from Nancysnotions.com. They are clear plastic, with a zip-lock top and a pocket on the outside. No, it's not recycling, but it's a good solution, none the less.
