DAY 9 TOPS THAT POP SEW ALONG...

...

DAY 9 - TOPS THAT POP SEW-A-LONG

(TOPS COMPLETED TO DATE:  30 AND GROWING!)

  April 15th through April 30th
NEXT UP:

Marilyn - Mountain Top Spices - New Look 6472
Sheila - Sheilaz-CKT - Tank refashion from RTW garment

My top is a re-fashion and scrap buster combined into one; it's a hacked pattern from Colette Patterns' Sencha Blouse.  It being spring and all, I had to embroider butterflies! No more minimalism this spring.
The lower part was an old bias self-made dress and the upper yoke is a scrap leftover from a linen jacket (also self-made). April is earth month, so once a year I up cycle things I already own, and complete UFOs and such. :)

 and as for me:

Faye - Baste & Gather Foxglove Tank
My Review:
I'm always attracted tank tops for summer.  This Baste & Gather Foxglove Tank caught my eye some time ago so I didn't have to think twice about purchasing the $5.00 pdf.  I don't think Baste & Gather  still sells patterns so I'm not sure if this pattern is still available.  I used a 1 yard remnant from a rayon challis that I used to make a top for my baby Sister Pat last summer.  Hope you're still enjoying your top Pat!

I LOVE rayon challis - but what fabric don't I love?!  It makes nice and breezy tops for our humid and sticky Georgia summers.  I try to make at least one per year from a pretty challis for easy breezy dressing. This pattern adapts itself  to knits or wovens.  The shoulders and racer back make it a true tank in every since of the word.  The flowy high low hem will work well with jeans, crop pants, shorts or my favorite denim skirt.  Just two pattern pieces - how great does it get.  The pattern suggests using purchased bias tape for the neck and armholes, but I made my own because I don't like the way purchased bias tape feels against my skin.  I think it's a WIN - a remnant and a PDF...

Faye - Second Version of Butterick 6425

Since the pattern was still out and this was such a quick top to make, I decided to make a second version.  I purchased this knit I know not when or where (I usually remember).  I made a top from it several years ago that's still in my closet and I still have enough left for a third top.

I did go up a size on this version for a little more ease in the bust area. I used a neckband finish again and also shortened the pattern because I did not want the tunic length.  I highly recommend this pattern if you are looking to give the cold shoulder design a try.  Two tops in one weekend was a sewing win for me even though they are the same style.  Hope I'll be able to get at least two more done during the course of the work week.

FIRST UP
Myra - 1 Simple Inspiration

Faye - Butterick 6425
Butterick 6425 My Review:
Can I tell you that I could hardly wait to finish this top.  As with ALL my projects, this one took far longer than I thought it should.  I purchased this fabric awhile ago (maybe spring 2015) from Hancock's on a shopping trip with my friend Cecil.  She purchased the fabric, and I bought the remnant from it - I love almost any print with pink.  For this pattern I needed 1 5/8 yard, but found that I had only 1 1/4 yd.   When I got ready to cut last night I found that the fabric was cut ridiculously crooked (or maybe the print was crooked) regardless, I was determined that the Aztec zigzag print would match.

I cut the fabric on the single layer to facilitate matching.  To accommodate my yardage shortage I cut a little short sleeve rather than the long one (it's summer in Georgia this week after all).   The the pattern is a tunic length, but I shortened it to a regular top length to fit my fabric.  All worked out well.

The Cold Shoulder craze started last summer but I never got around to making it then, so this is my very first of that type.  Having never sewn a cold shoulder design I was a little timid but this really was an easy make.  The pattern suggests that you turn the neckline under and stitch to finish - that didn't work for me, so I created a neckband from the scraps of fabric that I had leftover.  I think the band gives a much nicer finish.

If you are considering making this top, I would suggest adhering to Butterick's size chart for your full bust measurement.  My overthinking caused me to go down a size and although the top fits, I would have been more comfortable with just a little more ease across the bust area.

All in all I'm calling this top a win.  I plan on wearing it with brown or white pants this summer.  I will make this pattern again (going up a size next time), and may even consider making the tunic length.

Now I need to make a decision on which pattern I'll cut next.  Who's top will be up next???
