KICKING SOME STASH IN 2016...

...you know me, I'm always up to something.  This time it's Sew Much Talent's (Altheia Hudson)
"Let's Kick Some Stash"  2016 Stash Smashing Sew-A-Long (DARE YOU TO SAY THAT REAL FAST 3 TIMES- LOL) that's taking place January 4th through 30th that has my attention.
It's an interesting sew-a-long in that the type of garments you make will change every week; and there will be a prize awarded to the participant who "Kicks" the most stash (yardage wise) during the sew-a-long.  If  you are interested in joining the sew-a-long, you'll need to contact Alethia via Facebook message (@SewMuchTalent). This week's garment:  Tops.

You all know that I am definitely a top lover, especially those made of knit fabric.  I plan on knocking out several tops this week in honor of the sew-a-long.  At least that's the plan - we'll see!

First top of the week:
Vogue 8854
I've wanted this top since last winter when I saw it on Brenda's Sewing Nook, couldn't wait to sew it up.

YARDAGE USED:  2 1/4 YARDS

MY SYNOPSIS:  I've about had it with patterns sized (sm-med-lrg-xlg,xxl).  I choose my size based on my bust measurement, and what did I end up with? A gia-norous fit that's what - even the hood is huge.  I guess I'll just have to take a chance when using this type pattern sizing from here on out and just go with a size smaller.  Or, better yet, try to remember to choose my size based on Nancy Zieman's book.   Why, oh why can't I remember this information when choosing sizes???
Page 9 for information on choosing a pattern size to fit you through the shoulders and neck

Here's a picture my top after shaving several inches from the side seams.

WILL I MAKE IT AGAIN?:  The jury is still out on that one.

What is your experience with using patterns sized (sm-med-lrg-xlg,xxl)???

  1. Very nice top Faye! I don't have very many winter tops at all and this is a nice one that needs to be added to my list! It was so worth all of your hard edits to the sizing! When I'm working with these sm, med, lg etc., I have one size for knits which is typically smaller than what I would select for woven fabric. Then I tissue fit in a couple of key places like arm sync & bust just to be sure. Hope that helps.

I've sworn off all patterns with S-M-L sizing. They are always insanely big.

    1. I do agree. I would not normally make a medium, but but with patterns like this that's what I'll start using.

  4. I just made a Vogue shift V8897... measured to a large and had to take it in 3cm on both sides and re-shape the armholes. I made it in a sateen ... the front tab was also so deep I had to buy a clasp to keep from showing my bra! The clasp cost more than the dress. Vogue are SOOO expensive ... you would think the fit would be at least wearable! Wouldn't have been so annoyed if they overlapped their sizing ...eg; SM/MED/LG then LG/XL/XXL
at least I could have a choice then! Other than that ... it turned out OK :)

  6. Your top turned out nice. Not fond of the pattern sizes myself. Normally I cut my size but 95% of the time end up taking in the seams. Not my favorite thing to do, however I'd rather start out larger vs looking like a beef-a-roni after I finish the garment.

I really like the details as well as the overall fabric! Great pattern making skills

  8. Pity about the top Faye, because it is so beautiful. Sometimes I use big, baggy things as snuggly Sunday TV clothes on a cold night. Good luck with the stashbusting.

  9. I find that it is best to use your upper chest size for selecting the bust size for a pattern. If I don't the shoulders are too long/big and lots of fullness where I don't want or need it. As to s-m-l, I tend toward medium and adjust for bust fullness if needed. I find though some garments are large it is easier to make fit adjustments with too large than too small.

  10. Great job I am trying not to buy anything else for my stash.
