FESS UP...

...DO I HOARD FABRIC???
Lord please forgive me...YES I DO!!!

Do you own pieces that you love so much and think are so beautiful that you don't even want to cut into them?

What about you, ARE YOU A FABRIC HOARDER TOO???

  1. Fabric hoarder, what's that? I prefer the term of fabric collector. I'm not hoarding just saving for retirement. It the fabric wall caved in, I would be buried in fabric. LOL. DH just shakes his head sometimes when the FM boxes show up. Fabric is cheaper than therapy. :-)

  2. Oh yes, (looking at floor in shame). I've got fabric still in boxes that I've forgotten about. I'm on a fabric/pattern buying fast right now. My dd#1 said, 'mom, you're out of control--you're not even using what you have'. I needed that intervention. I think I like fabric and patterns more than I like sewing--sounds silly doesn't it?

    1. I haven't been able to put myself on a fast as of yet. I think it would be way too painful!

  3. You are not alone. But with all the projects I've been working on, I am so grateful that I can so easily shop at home. So don't look at it as hoarding, look at it as building your own store ;)

  5. I agree with Carolyn and Towanda....I am a fabric collector and yes Faye I have a number of pieces that are absolutely gorgeous and I knew what I wanted to make when I bought them but have since changed my mind a number of times....LOL! I don't make anymore excuses when having the yardage cut...I simply say I am buying it because I like fabric or is it I love fabric....I prefer buying fabric over going to the mall....

    1. Yeah I am a collector too. I just thought those cartoons were really cute. I'm with you Necie, I'd rather buy fabric than go to the mall too.

  6. I ordered from fabric mart twice last week and visited Hancock three times. I've purchased I don't know, a lot of fabric in the 10 months since I've started sewing. Sheesh. I don't want to think about the cash...just the possibilities!

My husband is smart though. He knows "happy wife = happy life" ;)

  7. Faye, I have 198 pieces and some of them are 5 yards in length. So I am not sure if I am a fabric hoarder or a fabric counter:) I have worked out that if I use 20 pieces a year, that I have enough fabric for 10 years. But really, whose counting :)

    1. 198 pieces of 5 yd lengths sounds like a gold mine. I have no inkling how many pieces I have, but it is nice to run into a piece that you've forgotten you have.

  8. Wow. Wish I had the stash of a few of you ;) I do have some fabric. I am trying to use some of it so that I quit getting the looks because I just started sewing and knitting again so if I sew and knit up a few more really nice things I might quit getting that look when I add to my stash of yarn and fabric :)

Wish my husband would figure out that math equation. :)

  9. I'm a collector, and so are you. It is such a pleasure to be able to choose from a few options when I want to sew. Buying fabric one piece at a time for each project puts us at the mercy of the fabric stores.

This I could never do. I can see people avoiding amassing huge fabric "collections" :) but I cannot buy one project at a time. Bleh!

    2. I know people who "say" they only buy fabric and patterns that they know they will sew in the next 30 days. There's absolutely no way for me to know what I will sew in the next 30 days. I do like keeping my options open.

This is a funny post as my name is CK and I am a fabric hoarder. I have traveled around the world and have brought beautiful pieces - some I have created something, some I have not. To top that off , I have friends and family that travel and they don't hesitate to buy me a nice piece of fabric from some faraway land. I have china silk, india silk, africa batiks and cottons, etc- again some I have cut and some I have not. I hate to have to say I used to have silk from china - oh it is just an ugly cycle because I continue to buy and not want to use. I need help!!!

While I still have pieces that I think are so beautiful that I don't want to cut into them, the fear has decreased a lot. The upholstery fabric out of which I made my coat was in my stash for six years. I was afraid to cut into it because I thought I'd ruin it. Once I said 'fuhgeddaboutit' and just cut it, I made a coat that I am proud to wear. Now I can enjoy this beautiful fabric every time I put the coat on.

    1. IKR! Rochelle told me just how beautiful your coat was seeing it in person! I know you enjoy it. It just marinated long enough for you to find just the right pattern to use with it.

  14. I never thought of myself as a hoarder until today... when I went to the store to buy some elastic and ended up buying a meter of red sparkly vinyl. For absolutely no reason other than I had to have it. I believe I have crossed the threshold into hoarder territory ;)

  15. Hello...my name is Diane...and I am a fabricholic. I need blinders on when I run into the store to buy elastic, or something so simple. I end up seeing some fabric calling my name, and ofcourse its on sale. Or love to shop on line. I admit I am addicted to fabric.....but also, vintage patterns from the 60's or 70's....hoarder...na...I am an equal opportunity fabric buyer! Thats my story and I am sticking to it!

  16. Faye, I seriously need to clean out my fabric stash...I've scheduled it for Christmas week!!! It all needs to get back into the fabric closet where it belongs! I am buying more than I sew, for sure, and it's crept back onto the dryer and now, for the first time ever, the hall closet. Yikes.

I feel pretty good about the patterns, though. I've stopped buying everything I like at 99 cent sales and started asking myself I would really make it before buying it. That has helped a lot.

  20. I think my stash is relatively small based on what I have seen out in the blogosphere.

"Do you own pieces that you love so much and think are so beautiful that you don't even want to cut into them?"
That answer is No. I used to stash that way but no more. If I have a beautiful piece of five yard goods and only need two yards for a fabulous project, I just cut it. It became my mantra a few years back, "Just Cut It". I have not had one regret because there is always more fabulous fabric to buy and I get the pleasure of finally sewing the "special stuff". So listen to me, Dear Faye, Just Cut It! ;)

  21. I like your mantra Bunny and think I will adopt it!!!

    2. I finally got a chance to wear the coat was in my element, feeling all proud, but need to tinker with it. One of the shoulder pads is bunched between the lining and the fashion fabric, totally annoyed me. I need to open up the lining seam and fix it, its seems the little thread tacking I did, did not hold up. Also, the coat is bleeding, my handbag has all kinds of black markings from it as well as the palm of my right hand, clearly its the hand I kept sticking into the right pocket. uggh.

  23. Faye, some people admire fine art and fine wine. We admire beautiful fabric and patterns. No one would tell them to get rid of their valuable collection so why should anyone expect us to part with ours. My daughter shakes her head and threatens me (12 tubs full and counting). My husband does not say a word because it is a hobby I love. He has electronics, and I have fabric.

  25. The whole internet knows I'm a hoarder. It's terrible, but I love my fabric and I love buying more of it, so what are you going to do? My excuse is that I really do sew a lot and I don't buy any pre-made clothes. The jacket I wrote about today, I've had both the fabric and the lining for over 5 years but I did eventually get around to sewing it. That means I don't have to get rid of anything, right? (The fact that I was in NYC for work last week and snuck in some Garment District time doesn't help...)

  26. Not only do I have fabric but I have patterns and trim. My favorite fabrics a touch them weekly.

  27. I had a calendar put out by those same people, but they didn't have awesome fabric references like these! I just bought 3 different possible fabric for my drapery cornices in the room Dan's renovating, because I couldn't decide which one was best. I know you're giving me an "Amen, Sister!" there.

    Happy Thanksgiving, Faye!

  28. Well, what a touchy subject! A few weeks ago I decide and told my husband that I have plans to not purchase any fabric for the rest of the year and possibly as long as I can into next year. So, why and I online 2-3 times daily checking for new arrivals and sales. It's got me rethinking this. I don't know if I can continue the anxiety. Don't laugh!
